The Italian Game: The Classic Battlefield
The Italian Game is one of the oldest recorded openings, dating back to the 16th century, and it remains a favorite for players at every level. It begins with 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4. While the Ruy Lopez puts pressure on the knight, the Italian Game has a much more aggressive target: the f7 pawn, which is the weakest point in Black’s camp because it is only protected by the king.
Lesson 1: The Power of the “Italian Bishop”
By placing the bishop on c4, you are immediately looking at the enemy king.
- The Target: This square is perfect for setting up early checkmating patterns or forcing Black into uncomfortable defenses.
- Level 1–2 Strategy: At this rating (0–1000 Elo), many players don’t realize the danger of the f7 square and often allow White to build a massive attack.
- King Safety: Just like in our king safety lessons, this bishop acts as a “menace” that can deliver discovered checks if the center opens up
